On Wednesday, April 22, 2026, Yeditepe University hosted a special seminar at the Blue Hall dedicated to Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky — one of the greatest marine painters in the history of world art.
The event brought together speakers Murat Öneş and Bülent Özükan, under the moderation of Dr. İmren Arbaç. Discussions focused on Aivazovsky's extraordinary artistry, his deep fascination with Istanbul and the Ottoman lands, and the lasting impact of his works in the world of publishing and cultural memory.
One of the seminar's most compelling themes was the idea that Aivazovsky was far more than a painter — he was a quiet cultural bridge between two great empires: the Ottoman and the Russian. His visits to Istanbul, his admiration for the Bosphorus, and his connections with the Ottoman court all stood as vivid expressions of this role.
The painter's unparalleled mastery in capturing waves, storms, and the play of light on water was also a central point of discussion. Participants underlined that his works do not merely offer a visual experience — they also reflect the political and cultural atmosphere of his era.
We extend our sincere gratitude to all attendees who joined us in celebrating art, history, and cultural heritage.
